Film Night: Dolores

Join us for Dolores, a compelling film about one of the U.S.A.’s most important but least known activists on Friday, March 16, 2018. We are delighted to announce that Peter Bratt, the filmmaker, is preparing a special introduction for our DAUK members.

Who is Dolores Huerta? For over 50 years, Dolores Huerta has been a pivotal figure in campaigning and organizing around labor rights, civil rights, and for Mexican-American, immigrants’, and women’s rights and dignity. Huerta originated the slogan "Si, se puede" (Yes, we can), inspiring former president Barack Obama to adopt that message as his motto in 2008.

Organized in collaboration with the DAUK Women’s Caucus, and the identities group of the Policy Network, this event offers an opportunity to discover more about Huerta's story and the struggles behind organizing the first agricultural workers’ union, and the impact of her activism.

Narrated by Huerta, her family, friends, and collaborators–and directed by Peter Bratt–the film weaves together documentary and contemporary footage, providing insight to the activist's tireless battles on behalf on farm workers, as well as the personal sacrifices she made along the way. Her children speak candidly about her long absences, yet her example inspired most of them to pursue their own social justice path, and their pride and respect for her shine through.

The film tracks links with other social movements of that period, and with key national political figures, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Robert Kennedy and Gloria Steinem, along with Huerta’s growing commitment to feminism. It also reveals why politics and gender led to Huerta’s absence from history books and university courses, which makes the film, according to The Washington Post: “… a fascinating corrective to 50-plus years of American history. It’s educational, to be sure, but also exhilarating, inspiring and deeply emotional.”

Join us to watch this important and beautiful film, and for the post screening discussion on how these issues resonate with the challenges and opportunities we face in current American politics.

The film may focus on events of more than half a century ago, but it resonates remarkably with today’s political reality, as a president with the lowest popularity ratings in history attempts to unravel the victories achieved in that remarkable period of social protest and since. Dolores is also a stark reminder that American institutions are resilient, and have weathered and deflected great challenges in the past and can do so now, as long as citizens remain engaged.

Dolores Huerta did finally receive recognition for her contributions from former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. She continues to be an outspoken activist and was an honorary co-chair of the 2018 Women’s March. Her film will leave you inspired to continue fighting for social and economic justice for all Americans.

Tickets: Regular £12.50 Concession £6.00. Book now to avoid disappointment.

Note: for this film, we are able to offer a captioned screening; contact films@democratsabroad.org.uk if you are interested in this facility.

About the speakers:

Dr Michael McQuarrie is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics where he works on issues related to politics, protest, and civil society. His analysis of the 2016 election, “The Revolt of the Rust Belt: Place and Politics in the Age of Anger”, was recently published in the British Journal of Sociology. Prior to becoming an academic, Dr. McQuarrie worked as a labor organizer in West Virginia and Ohio and as a community organizer in the South Bronx. He is currently conducting research on social and economic transformation in the English Midlands to understand voting patterns that produced the Brexit vote result.

Kate Van Dermark, a San Diego native, has lived in six states and visited 38 countries. She is a former workers rights advocate in health care, emergency manager in aviation, and community organizer in social justice. By day, she raises two feminists under two, and by night, vice chairs the DAUK Women’s Caucus. She is passionate about cross-cultural communication, privilege, and intersectionality, and has engaged in political activism since her first protest at the age of 9.
